Question

A farmer was advised not to use a particular type of fertilizer in his crop after harvesting a crop of peas. Give one reason for such a piece of advice. Name any two crops other than pea which would have shown the same effect.

Nitrogen fixing symbiotic bacteria (e.g. Rhizobium) remain associated with the root nodules of pea plant. These bacteria enrich the soil with ammonia and nitrate necessary for plant growth. Hence, a farmer need not use nitrogenous fertilisers in the field after harvesting a crop of peas. Besides peas gram (chana) and green pea (moong) also show the same effect.
