Solution

Step1: Assuming the ages of father and son by variables xandy

Let the present age of father and son be x&y respectively.

Step :2

Present age7 years ago3 years after
Fatherxx-7x+3
Sonyy-7y+3

Step :3 Applying the condition

According to the question,

Case :1

x-7=7(y-7)ā‡’x-7=7y-49ā‡’x-7y=-49+7ā‡’x-7y=-42.................................(1)

Case :2

x+3=3(y+3)ā‡’x+3=3y+9ā‡’x-3y=9-3ā‡’x-3y=6.........................(2)

Step :4 Solving for x&y using elimination method

1-(2)ā‡’-4y=-48ā‡’y=484=12

To get x, substitute y=12 in equation (1)

(1)ā‡’x-7(12)=-42ā‡’x-84=-42ā‡’x=84-42=42

Therefore the present age of father is 42years and that of the son is12 years

Checking,

x-7=42-7=35y-7=12-7=535=7(5)x+3=42+3=45y+3=12+3=1545=3Ɨ15
