Question

A fisherman notices that his boat is moving up and down periodically, owing to waves on the surface of the water. It takes 2.5 s for the boat to travel from its highest point to its lowest a total distance of 0.62m. The fisherman sees that the wave crests are spaced 6.0 m apart. What would be the equation of such a wave?

A

y=0.31 sin(2π5tπ3x)

Solution

The correct option is A

y=0.31 sin(2π5tπ3x)

(Note:- This is a snapshot of wave the boat will oscillate periodically (up/down) at one fixed x coordinate and the wave will move below it)
Distance between a crest and consecutive through isλ2 time taken for wave to travel λ2 is half of a time period = T2

So given T2= 2.5 sec

So given T=5sec=2πω

ω=2π5

2A=0.62

A=0.31 m

λ=6m(distance between 2 consecutive crests k=2πλ=2π6=π3 general equation of wave

y=A sin(ωtkx)

y=0.31 sin(2π5tπ3x)
