Question

A football of mass 5 kg moving with a velocity of 10 m/s hits a pole and, the ball bounces back with a velocity of 5m/s. Find the change in momentum and the force exerted on the ball, if the force acts for 0.02s.

Open in App
Solution

Mass of football=0.5kg
Initial velocity(u)=10m/s
Initial momentum(mu)=0.5×10=5kg m/s
Final velocity(v)= -5m/s
Final momentum(mv)=0.5×-5= -2.5 kg m/s
Change in momentum = mu-mv = 5-(-2.5) kg m/s = 7.5 kg m/s
Force = Change in momentum/t = 7.5/0.02 = 375 N
