A glass filled with water up to its brim contains some amount of ice. When the ice melts, the water does not overflow. Explain.

The water will not overflow when the ice melts in a glass and the reason for the same is discussed below.

  1. The ice present in the glass displaces some volume of the water which is equal to the volume of the ice.
  2. When the ice melts, the melted ice occupies the same volume as it was occupying earlier.
  3. Since there is no change in the volume of water before and after the melting of ice, therefore there occurs no overflow of water from the glass.
