A glass plate of length 10 cm, breadth 4 cm and thickness 0.4 cm weighs 20 g in air. Half of the plate is immersed in water in such a way that its breadth is perpendicular to water. Calculate force due to surface tension and buoyant force of plate. Surface tension of water is 70 dyne/cm.

Volume immersed=total volume2
T=70 dyne/cm

surface tension, Fs=T×2(l+t)
Fs=T×2(10.4)980
Fs=70×2(10.4)980=1.5 gf

Now, buoyant force
Fb=Vs2×ρL×g
=l×b×t2×1×g=8 gf
