Question

A hockey player receives a corner shot at a speed of 15 m/s at an angle 30 with y - axis and then kicks the ball along x - axis with speed 30 m/s. If the mass of the ball is 150 gm and it remains in contact with the hockey stick for 0.01 s, then find the force exerted on the ball along x - axis.

Solution

The correct option is C 562.5 N
Mass of ball, m=150 gm=0.15 kg
Let v2x be the final velocity of ball along x - axis
v1x and v1y be the components of intial velocity of the ball along x - axis and y-axis respectively.
The situation is shown in the figure.

v1x=v1cos60=152 m/s
and v2x=30 m/s
We know, F=ΔPΔt
Net average force acting on ball along x - axis is Fx
Fx=ΔPxΔt=PfPiΔt=mv2xmv1xΔt
Fx=m[v2xv1x]Δt=0.150[30(15cos60)]0.01

Fx=0.15×37.50.01=562.5 N
