(a) Methane is prepared by heating a mixture of sodium ethanoate (sodium acetate) with soda lime (a mixture sodium hydroxide and calcium oxide). The arrangement of apparatus is shown below:


(b) Methane is collected by the downward displacement of water, since it is slightly soluble in water and is lighter than air.
(c) Soda lime is used since it is not deliquescent and does not attack glass.
