A man lifts a suitcase wighing 10 kg from the ground and puts it on his head 1.7 m above the ground. Calculate the work done by him on the suitcase.
170 J
Force (F) = mass x acceleration due to gravity = (10 x 10) N = 100 N
Work done by the man on the suitcase= F x s
F = 100 N & s = 1.7 m
Work done = 100 x 1.7 = 170 J
Hence the required work done is 170 J. It can be noted that the work is done by the man on the suitcase because he lifts it against the gravitational force of the Earth.
