(B)M2cl

(C)Mcl2

(D)Mcl

Solution

The valency of metal M is 2 . The formula of M with its chloride is MCl2.

The chemical formula for the metal chloride will be MCl2. This is because from the formula MSO4 we come to know that the valency of the metal M will be 2 as the valency of SO4 is 2, We first switch places of the valence to form the formula M2SO4, but the formula given to us is MSO4, this implies that there should be another 2 after SO4{M2(SO4)2} then and only then will we cut both the 2(s) and reduce the formula to MSO4, therefore we conclude that the valency of M has to be 2 to satisfy the formula MSO4, and thus the formula of the metal chloride will be MCl2(the valency of chlorine is 1 and is thus not shown in the formula).
