A milliammeter reading from 0 to 50 mA has a resistance of 396 ohm. How will you change it so that it can be used as an ammeter to measure a maximum current of 5A?

Solution
Given : Ig=50mA=0.05ARg=396Ω
Maximum current I=5A
So, I=Ig(1+RgRs)
Or 5=0.05×(1+396Rs)
Or Rs=4Ω
Thus a 4Ω shunt resistance is to be used in parrallel to galvanometer to convert it into an ammeter.
