(b) (i) How will you manufacture ammonia by Haber process?
(ii) Write any two uses of inert gases.

Solution

i) Oxoacids of sulfur are:

  • Sulfurous acid H2SO3
  • Sulfuric acid H2SO4

b) i) Ammonia is manufactured using Haber's process by taking N2,H2 in 1:3 proportions. Both are reacted in a tank in presence of Fe,Mo which are catalyst and promoter respectively.

N2+3H22NH3

ii) Helium is much less dense (lighter) than air and is used in balloons and blimps. Because of its inertness, it doesn’t burn in air unlike hydrogen which was formally used in large balloons

Neon is used in the familiar ‘neon sign” used in advertisement.

Argon, like all the noble gases is chemically inert. It is used in filament bulbs because the metal filament will not burn in argon
