A number is increased by 10% and then reduced by 10%. What is the effective change in the original number?
Decreases by 1%
Let the number be x.
10% of x =x10
Given, the number x is increased by 10%.
Obtained number =x+x10=11x10
Now, 10% of 11x10=11x100
Now, the number 11x10 reduced by 10% i.e.,
Final number =11x10−11x100
=110x − 11x100
=99x100
= 99% of x
∴ Effective change = Final number - Initial number
= 99% of x- 100% of x
= -1% of x
Thus, the number is effectively decreased by 1%.
