Question

A particle is moving at a constant speed v from a large distance towards concave mirror of radius R along the principal axis. If the speed of the images as a function of the distance x of the particle from the mirror is given as R2v(Rbx)2. Find b

Solution

Let y represent the image distance and x the object distance from the mirror.

1y+1x=2R

1y=2R+1x=2x+RRx

y=RxR2x................(1)
Differentiating equation (1)

dydt=Rdxdt(R2x)+2Rxdxdt(R2x)2

dydt=[R(R2x)+2Rx]dxdt(R2x)2=R2v(R2x)2
