Question

An object moves with uniform velocity (V0) on the axis of concave mirror. If it moves towards the mirror. Show that when it is at a distance u from the mirror. The velocity of the image is given by Vt=(R2uR)2Vo where R is the radius of mirror.

Solution

1v+1u=1f

Here, f=R2 since focal length of a concave mirror is negative.

1v=1u2R

v=uRR2u

dudt=Vo is positive as it is towards the mirror that is rightward

Differentiating both sides w.r.t t-

dvdt=VoR(R2u)uR(2Vo)(R2u)2

Vi=R2(2uR)2Vo
