The person has a tendency to fall downwards due to his weight. As friction opposes the relative motion between surfaces, the friction will act in vertically upward direction. Also, friction force depends on magnitude of the normal reaction between two surfaces, in order to balance his weight, he applies a force perpendicular to the surface of the wall. This in turn increases the normal reaction between the person and wall which helps him to prevent from falling down.
