A person is having goitre in his neck. How will you identify through symptoms, whether he is suffering from hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism?

Goitre:

  1. It is a bump on the front of the neck caused by an enlargement of the thyroid gland.
  2. The lack of iodine in the diet cause Goitre.
  3. Both hypothyroidism (endemic goitre) and hyperthyroidism (acute goitre) can cause goitre (exophthalmic goiter).

Hypothyroidism

  1. Hypothyroidism is diagnosed when a person has a low body temperature, low blood pressure, sluggishness, and a tendency to obesity.

Hyperthyroidism

  1. Hyperthyroidism is diagnosed when she or he has a high body temperature, high blood pressure, tachycardia, increased appetite, nervousness, and bulging of the eyeballs (exophthalmos).
