Question

A person travelling in a straight line moves with a constant velocity of 10 m/s for a distance of 100 m and with a constant velocity of 15 m/s for the next equal distance in the same direction. The average velocity of the motion (in m/s) is

Open in App
Solution

Given,
Velocity of first half (v1)=10 m/s
Velocity of second half (v2)=15 m/s
Displacement with velocity v1 d1=100 m
Displacement with velocity v2 d2=100 m
Now,
Time taken for displacement d1 with velocity v1 is given by
t1=d1v1=10010=10 sec ...........(1)
And,
Time taken for displacement d2 with velocity v2
t2=d2v2=10015=203 sec .........(2)
We know,
Average velocity =Total displacementTotal time
vav=d1+d2t1+t2
vav=200503
vav=12 m/s
The average velocity of the person travelling is 12 m/s
Hence, the answer is 12.
