No, this statement is not true. A plant cannot release oxygen during night time. Plants release oxygen only during light reaction or photochemical phase of photosynthesis. Light reaction are dependent on light. They are responsible for the generation of assimilatory power and splitting of water. Splitting of water results into evolution of oxygen. During night time, only dark reactions take place. These reactions are independent of light and they do not release oxygen.
