Question

A player throws a ball upwards with an initial speed of 29.4 m s1.

(a) What is the direction of acceleration during the upward motion of the ball?

(b) What are the velocity and acceleration of the ball at the highest point of its motion?

(c) Choose thex= 0 m andt= 0 s to be the location and time of the ball at its highest point, vertically downward direction to be the positive direction ofx-axis, and give the signs of position, velocity and acceleration of the ball during its upward, and downward motion.

note that i just want the answer of part c.

clearly tell with diagram.

Solution

If we take positive x axis towards downward direction, and acceleration is also in downward direction.
During downward motion,
Position of the object is in downward direction hence it is positive.
Velocity of the object is in downward direction , hence it is also positive
Acceleration is in downward direction so it is also positive,

During upward motion.
object moves upward, towards the negative x axis so position of the object is negative
velocity is also towards the negative x axis so it is also negative.
Acceleration is in vertically downward direction so it is positive.
