Question

A potential difference of 2 V is applied across the opposite faces of a Germanium plate, of area 1 cm2 and thickness 0.5 mm. If the concentration of electrons is 2×1019 m3 and mobilities of electrons and holes are 0.36 m2/V-s and 0.14 m2/V-s respectively, the current flowing through the plate will be,

Solution

The correct option is D 0.64 A
Conductivity of Germanium is given by,

σ=nqe(μe+μh)

=2×1019×1.6×1019(0.36+0.14)

=1.6 (Ωm)1

Now, R=ρlA=lσA

R=0.5×1031.6×104=258 Ω

And, I=VR=2258=0.64 A

Hence, (D) is the correct answer.
