Question

A projectile of mass 2 m explodes at the highest point of its path. It breaks into two equal parts. One part retraces its path. Find the distance of the second part from the point of projection when it finally lands on the ground. Given that range of the projectile would be 200 m if no explosion had taken place.

Solution

The correct option is B 400 m
As there is no horizontal force acting, so the path of COM will not change.

Let the second mass fall at a distance x from the final position of COM.

Given: range of projectile (if no explosion had take place), R=200 m.
Taking the coordinate of COM at the point of landing as origin.

m(R)+m(x)=0
or x=R=200 m

So, distance of second mass from the point of projection is R+x=400 m
