Question

(a) Pyrolusite on heating with KOH in the presence of air gives a dark green compound (A). The solution of (A) on treatment with H2SO4 gives a purple coloured compound (B), which gives following reactions:
(i) KI on reaction with alkaline solution of (B) changes into a compound (C).
(ii) The colour of the compound (B) disappears on treatment with the acidic solution of FeSO4.
(iii) With conc. H2SO4 compound (B) gives (D) which can decompose to yield (E) and oxygen. Identify (A) to (E) and write balanced chemical equations for the formation of (A) and (B) and for the steps (i) to (iii).
(b) Complete and balance the following chemical equations.
(i) Au+HCl+HNO3........+........+H2O

Solution

The correct option is E all of these correct
(a) The dark green compound (A) is K2MnO4
The purple coloured compound (B) is KMnO4
The compound (C) is KIO3
The compound (D) is Mn2O7
The compound (E) is MnO2
manganese dioxide reacts with potassium hydroxide solution to form potassium manganate.
MnO2+2KOH+12O2K2MnO4+H2O
Potassium manganate on reaction with sulphuric acid gives potassium permanganate.
3MnO24+4H+2MnO4+MnO2+2H2O
Following are the reactions given by potassium permananate.
(i) 2MnO4+I+H2OΔIO3+2MnO2+2OH
(ii) MnO4+8H++5Fe2+5Fe3++Mn2++4H2O
(iii) 2MnO4+2H+Mn2O7+H2O
2Mn2O7Δ4MnO2+3O2
(b) The balanced chemical reactions are as given below.
(i) Au+4HCl+HNO3HAuCl4+NO+2H2O
(ii) C+HNO3CO2+4NO2+2H2O
(iii) Sn+2KOH+H2OK2SnO3+2H2
(iv) Cu(OH)2+2NH4NO3+2NH4OH[Cu[(NH3)4]4](NO3)2+4H2O
