Question

A real image of magnification 2 is obtained when an object of height h is placed at x cm distance from a concave mirror of focal length 10 cm, then the value of |x| is.

Solution

Given:
|m|=2; f=10 cm; u=x cm

We know that, magnification m=vu

For a real image, object distance u>f and the image formed is inverted. So we take the magnification to be negative.

Substituting the given data,
2=vxv=2x

Using mirror formula,

1v+1u=1f

we get,

12x+1x=1102+12x=110

32x=110

x=15 cm

|x|=15
