Solution

The correct option is A 5×107N/m2
Free expansion of the rod =αLΔθ

=15×1060C×2m×(5020)0C

=9×104m=0.9mm

If the expansion is fully prevented, then

Strain=9×1042=4.5×104

Temperature Stress = Strain ×Y

=4.5×104×2×1011=9×107N/m2

If 0.4 mm expansion is allowed, then length restricted to expand

=0.90.4=0.5mm

Strain=5×1042=2.5×104

Temperature stress = Strain ×Y=2.5×104×2×1011=5×107N/m2
