Question

A rope of length 4 m having mass density 1.5 kg/m lying on a horizontal frictionless surface is pulled at one end by a force of 12 N. What is the tension in newtons in the rope at a point 1.6 m from the other end?

Solution

As shown in figure the mass of the rope: m = 4 × 1.5 = 6 kg
Acceleration: a=12/6=2 m/s2

Mass of part 1 as shown in figure m1=1.6×1.5=2.4 kg
T=m1a=2.4×2=4.8 N
