A sample of chloroform before using as anaesthetic is tested by AgNO3 solution, as pure chloroform doesn't give precipitate with this solution. White precipitate will be obtained when AgCl forms in solution, but as CHCl3 is a covalent compound, so it doesn't provide chloride ion to react with AgNO3 and white precipitate will not form.

Chloroform undergoes oxidation to form phosgene which is an extremely poisonous gas.
