A sample of hard water contains 1 mg of CaCl2 and 1 mg MgCl2 per litre. Calculate the hardness of water in terms of CaCO3 present in per 106 parts of water.

Molecular weight of CaCl2 = 111 g
Molecular weight of CaCO3 = 100 g
Molecular weight of MgCl2 = 95 g
Now, 111 g CaCl2 = 100 g CaCO3
1 mg CaCl2 = 100111 mg CaCO3
=0.9 mg CaCO3
Similarly,
1 mg MgCl2 = 10095 mg CaCO3
= 1.05 mg CaCO3
Hardness of CaCO3 in ppm,
(0.9+1.05)×103g×106mL103ml = 1.95 ppm
