Question

A single under-reamed pile is to be installed in a hard clay deposit. The undrained strength obtained from a series of vane tests at different depths have shown linear relationship, Cu=75+5D in kN/m2, where 'D' is the depth in metres. The dia of pile shaft and the bulb are 1.5 m & 3 m respectively. The centre of under-ream is located at 10 m from ground surface. The allowable load on the pile to ensure an overall factor of safety 2.5.
(given α=0.4)

Solution

The correct option is A 3935 kN

D=10m

:Given equation Cu=75+5D

At D=0 m75kN/m2=Cu

D=10 m125kN/m2=Cu

Average cohesion of shaft =75+1252

=100kPa

Given, d=1.5m,Du=3m

Ab=π4D2u

=π4×32=7.068m2

As=πdL=π×1.5×10

As=47.124m2

Qu=fbAb+fsAs

=CNcAb+αcAs

=125×9×7.068+0.4×100×47.124

Qu=9836.46kN

Qs=QuF=9836.462.5=3934.58
