Question

A solid body of mass 150g and volume 250cm3 is put in water. Find the density of the body. On the basis of it, explain whether the body will float or sink?

Solution

The density of a solid body is given as Mass of the body / Volume of the body.
In this case, the mass of the body is 150g and volume of the body is 250cm3.
So, density of the solid body is = 150250=0.6g/cm3.
A body will float if the density of it less than the density of the liquid it is floating upon and it will sink if the density of the body is more than the density of the liquid it is floating on.
Here, the density of the solid body is less than the density of water. Therefore, the body will float.
