Question 18
A spiral is made up of successive semicircles, with centres alternately at A and B, starting with centre at A of radii 0.5 cm, 1.0 cm, 1.5 cm, 2.0 cm, ……… as shown the n figure. What is the total length of such a spiral made up of thirteen consecutive semicircles? (Take π=227)

Solution

Perimeter of semicircle=πrP1=π(0.5)=π2 cmP2=π(1)=π cmP3=π(1.5)=3π2 cmP1,P2,P3 are the lengths of the semicircles.π2,π,3π2,2πP1=π2 cmP2=π cmd=P2P1=ππ2=π2First term=P1=a=π2 cmSn=n2[2a+(n1)d]Therefore, Sum of the length of 13 consecutive circles,S13=132[2(π2)+(131)π2]=132[π+6π]=132(7π)
= 132×7×227
= 143 cm
