Question

A stationary source is emitting sound at a fixed frequency f0, which is reflected by two cars approaching the source. The difference between the frequencies of sound reflected from the cars is 1.2 % of f0. What is the difference in the speeds of the cars (in km per hour) to the nearest integer? The cars are moving at constant speeds much smaller than the speed of sound which is 330 ms1

Solution

Let the speed of the cars be v1 and v2.
Frequency received by the car, f1=vvv1fo
Frequency reflected by car, f2=(v+v2v)(vvv1)fo
Δf=f2f1=(v+v2vv2v+v1vv1)f2
Solving we get:
Δf=(2v2v2)fov
Equating this f to 1.2fo100
we get, v2v1=7
