Question

A steel ball initially at a pressure of 1.0×105Pa is heated from 20C to 120C keeping its volume constant. Find the pressure inside the ball. Coefficient of linear expansion of steel =12×106/C and bulk modulus of steel =1.6×1011N/m2.

Solution

The ball tries to expand its volume. But it is kept in the same volume. So it is kept at a constant volume.
So the stress arises is defined as:
P(ΔVV)=B

P=BΔVV=B×γΔθ

Substiting the values in above relation:
P=B×3αΔθ

=1.6×1011×106×3×12×106×(12020)

=57.6×1975.8×108pa
