Question

A steel plate of face area 4cm2 and thickness 0.5cm is fixed rigidly at the lower surface. A tangential force of 10N is applied on the upper surface. Find the lateral displacement of the upper surface with respect to the lower surface. Rigidity modulus of steel =8.4×1010 Nm2.

Solution

Area,A=4cm2=4×104m2

Thickness,d=0.5cm=0.5×102m

Force,F=10N

Rigiditymodulus,m=8.4×1010Nm2

Angulardisplacement=θ

m=FAθ=104×104θ

θ=104×104×8.4×1010=0.297×106

Lat.displacement=θ×d=0.297×106×0.5×102=1.5×109m
