Question

A stone is thrown in a vertically upward direction with a velocity of 5 m/s. If the acceleration of the stone during its motion is 10 m/s in the downward direction, what will be the height attained by the stone and how much time will it take to reach there?

Solution

Dear Student,

u=5 m/sAs the acceleration acts in the opposite direction of initial velocity, so it is negative.a=-10 m/s2At the height point, v=0Using, v2-u2=2as02-52=2×-10×s-25=-20ss=2520=1.25 mAgain, v=u+at0-5=-10tt=510=0.5 sTime taken by the stone to reach the heighest point=0.5 s
So, the maximum height attained by the stone is 1.25m.
And, Time taken to reach is 0.5s
