Solution

Let's B alone take x days to finish the work.
B’s 1 days work = 1x

A alone can finish the work in = x - 10
A’s 1 days work= 1x10

Given: A and B together can finish the same work in 12 days.
(A and B)'s 1 days work = 112

A’s 1 days work + B’s 1 days work = 1x+1x10

According to the question,

1 over x plus fraction numerator 1 over denominator x minus 10 end fraction equals 1 over 12
fraction numerator x minus 10 plus x over denominator x open parentheses x minus 10 close parentheses end fraction equals 1 over 12
fraction numerator x minus 10 plus x over denominator x squared minus 10 x end fraction equals 1 over 12
fraction numerator 2 x minus 10 over denominator x squared minus 10 x end fraction equals 1 over 12
12(2x10)=x210x
24x120=x210x
x210x24x+120=0
x234x+120=0
x230x4x+120=0
x(x30)4(x30)=0
(x30)(x4)=0
(x30)=0or(x4)=0

x=30 or x=4
The value of x cannot be less than 10, so x= 30

Hence, the time taken by B to finish the work in 30 days
