Question

A tank with a lid is 2.5 m long, 2 m wide and 2.4 m high. How much metal sheet was required for constructing the tank? What was the cost of constructing it as Rs 10 per sq m? How many cu m of water will the tank hold?

Solution

Length (l) of the tank = 2.5 m
Breadth (b) of the tank = 2 m
Height (h) of the tank = 2.4 m
Total surface area of the tank = 2 (l × b + b × h + h × l)
= 2 (2.5 × 2 + 2 × 2.4 + 2.4 × 2.5) m2
= 2 (5 + 4.8 + 6) m2
= 2 (9.8 + 6) m2
= 2 (15.8) m2
= 31.6 m2
∴ 31.6 m2 of metal sheet was required for constructing the tank.
Cost of constructing 1 m2 of the tank = Rs 10
Cost of constructing 31.6 m2 of the tank = Rs 10 × 31.6 = Rs 316
Volume of the tank = length × breadth × height
= 2.5 × 2 × 2.4 m3
= 12 m3
∴ The tank will hold 12 m3 of water.
