Question

A teacher demonstrated the experiment "To find the equivalent resistance of two resistors when connected in series". Rahul and Raghav after observing the experiment concluded that :

Rahul: The current passing through the resistors in series combination is same.

Raghav : The potential difference across the ends of the circuit is greater than the sum of potential differences across each of the resistors.

Out of the options given below which one is correct?

(a) Rahul is right, Raghav is wrong.

(b) Raghav is right, Rahul is wrong.

(c) Both Rahul and Raghav are wrong.

(d) Both Rahul and Raghav are right.

Solution

The current flowing across the the resistors connected in series will be equal, independent of its position in the electric circuit. It means that in a series combination of resistors the current is the same in every part of the circuit or the same current through each resistor. On the other hand, a parallel circuit divides the current through the resistors. The potential difference across the ends of the circuit will be equal to the sum of potential differences across each of the resistors. Therefore, Rahul's statement is right and Raghav's statement is wrong.
