Question

A thin film of liquid polymer, n=1.25 coats a slab of Pyrex, n=1.50. White light is incident perpendicularly on the film. In the reflection, full destructive interference occurs for λ=600nm and full constructive interference occurs for λ=700nm. What is the thickness of the polymer film?

Solution

The correct option is D 840nm
For case when wave Ra is in phase with wave Rb,
Destructive interference occurs when 2t=(m1+12)λ1n
Constructive interference occurs when 2t=m2λ2n
Given : λ1=600nm
λ2=700nm
n=1.25
m1 and m2 have to be integer.
Thus, (m1+12)λ1n=m2λ2n
Putting the values , gives m1=3 and m2=3
Now from equation, 2t=m2λ2n
2t=3×700nm1.25 gives t=840nm
