$∴$ The train was supposed to have reached the station an hour and 40 minutes before 4:20 a.m.

1 hour and 40 minutes
=
1 hour + 20 minutes + 20 minutes

An hour before 4:20 a.m. is 3:20 a.m.

20 minutes before 3:20 a.m. is 3:00 a.m.
