Question

A train starting from rest moves with a uniform acceleration of 0.2 m/s2 for 5 minutes. Calculate the speed acquired and the distance travelled in this time.

Open in App
Solution

Step 1, Given data

Initial speed = 0
Time taken = 5 min = 300 s
Let final speed be v

Step 2, Finding the final speed

We know,
From equation of motion ,
v = u + at

Putting all the values
= 0 + 0.2 × 300 = 60 m/s

Hence the final speed is 60 m/s

Step 3, Finding the distance traveled

Let the distance traveled be s.

Using the second equation of motion,

s=ut+12at2

Putting all the values

s=0+12×0.2×3002

After solving

s = 9000 m = 9 km

Hence the total distance traveled is 9 km.
