Question

A train weighing 1000 tons is moving on a horizontal track with a uniform velocity of 10m/s.The total resistance to the motion of the train is 5 kgf per ton.If g=10m/s2,then the power of the engine is

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Given

Mass of train (m)= 1000 ton

Velocity of train (v)= 10m/s

Step 2: Formula used

Engine power(P) = F*v

1 kgf = 10 N

Step 3: Finding total force

Resistance offered per ton = 5 kgfton = 50 Nton

The resistance offered for 1000 tonne (F)= 50*1000 = 50000 N

Step 4: Finding power

For moving with constant velocity,

Power, P = 50000*10 W

P = 500* 1000 W

P = 500 KW

Hence, the power of the engine is 500 KW.
