Question

A transverse sinusoidal wave moves along a string in the positive x-direction at a speed of 10cm/s. The wavelength of the wave is 0.5 m and its amplitude is 10 cm. At a particular time t, the snap-shot of the wave is shown in figure. The velocity of the point P when its displacement is 5 cm is Figure:

Solution

The correct option is A 3π50^j m/s
Particle displacement, y=asin[2πλ(vtx)]
Putting y=5 cm;
a=10 cm
sin[2πλ(vtx)]=12

2πλ(vtx)]=π6

Particle velocity, v=dydt=a(2πλv) cos[2πλ(vtx)]

Given, a=10 cm;v=0.1 ms1;λ=0.5 m
2πλ(vtx)]=π6
v=3π50 ms1 along y-axis
or v=3π50^j ms1
