Question

A uniformly charged conducting sphere of 2.4 m diameter has a
surface charge density of 80.0 μC/m2.
Find the charge on the sphere.

What is the total electric flux leaving the surface of the
sphere?

Solution

Given, diameter of sphere =2.4m
Radius of sphere r=2.42=1.2m
Surface charge density =ChrgeSurface area
σ=q4πr2q=σ×4πr2=80×106×4×3.14×1.2×1.2q=1.4×103C

Total flux=ϕ
Using Gauss's theorem,
Total flux leaving the surface ϕ=Total chargeε0ε0=qε0=1.45×1038.854×1012ϕ=1.6×108Nm2/C
Thus, the flux leaving the surface of sphere is 1.6×108Nm2/C.
