A wall has a length of 8 m and a breadth of 4 m. To paint the wall, the painter asked for Rs. 5 per square meter. There is a door in the wall which has a height of 2.4 m and a breadth of 1.2 m. Find the cost incurred for painting the wall.
Rs. 145.60
Since the door need not be painted, we have to subtract the area of the door from that of the wall’s area.
Area of a rectangle with length 'l' and breadth 'b' = l×b
Given, length of the wall = 8 m
breadth of the wall = 4 m
∴ Wall’s area = 8 × 4 = 32 m2
Similarly, door’s area = 2.4 × 1.2 = 2.88 m2
Area to be painted = (32 – 2.88) m2 = 29.12 m2
Amount charged by the painter = Rs. 5m2
∴ Money to be paid for getting the wall painted = Rs. 5m2 × 29.12 m2 = Rs. 145.6 [m2 in the numerator and denominator cancel each other]
