Question

A well with 10 m inside diameter is dug 14 m deep. earth taken out of it is spread all around to a width of 5 m to form an embankment .find the height of embankment.

Solution

Given: Diameter of the well (d) =10 m
Radius of well (r) =d2=102=5 m
And, Depth of well (h) =14 m
Volume of earth dug out =πr2h
=π×52×14
=350π m3

Now, Let the height of embankment be H m.
So, Volume of embankment =350π m3
π(r+5)2Hπr2H=350π
H[(r+5)2r2]=350
H[(5+5)252]=350
H(10025)=350
H=35075
H=4.67
Hence, the height of the embankment is 4.67 m.
