(b) What happens when carbon dioxide gas is passed through lime water?

Solution

(a) Acids react with metal carbonates and produce metal salt, water, and carbon dioxide gas.
For example, Sodium carbonate reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce sodium chloride, water, and carbon dioxide.

2HCl(aq)+Na2CO3(s)2NaCl(aq)+H2O(l)+CO2(g)

(b) When CO2 is passed through limewater,
the solution turns milky due to the formation of white precipitate of CaCO3. This reaction is often sued as a test to detect the evolution of CO2 gas.

Ca(OH)2(aq)+CO2(g)CaCO3(s)+H2O(l)
