Question

A wire is in the shape of a square of side 10cm. If the wire is rebent into a rectangle of length 12cm, find its breadth. Which figure encloses more area and by how much?

Solution

If the same wire is used then,

Perimeter of square = Perimeter of rectangle

4×side=2(l+b)

4(10)=2(12+b)

40=24+2b

b=8cm

So, breadth of rectangle is 8cm.

Area of square = (side)2

=(10)2

=100cm2

Area of rectangle = l×b

= 12×8

= 96cm2

Thus, area of square is larger by 10096=4cm2
