Question

(a) Write the relation between object distance (u), image distance (v) and focal distance (f) of a spherical lens.
(b) What is magnification?
(c) The refractive index of glass with respect to air is 32 and the refractive index of water with respect to air is 43. If the speed of light in air is 3×108m/s, find the speed of light in (i) glass, (ii) water.

Solution

(a) The relation between object distance (u), image distance (v) and focal distance (f) of a spherical lens:
1f=1v1u

(b) Magnification is defined as the ratio of the height of the image to the height of the object.
Magnification, m=hiho

(c) Given:
The refractive index of glass with respect to air = 32
The refractive index of water with respect to air = 43
Refractive index (of a medium) =speedoflightinairspeedoflightinmedium

(i) 32=speed of light in airspeed of light in glass
Speed of light in glass = speed of light in air1.5 = 3×1081.5=2×108m/s

(ii) 43=speed of light in airspeed of light in water
Speed of light in water = speed of light in air1.33 = 3×1081.33=2.25×108m/s
