Question

Account for the following: Ethylamine is soluble in water whereas aniline is not?

Open in App
Solution

Ethylamine is soluble in water whereas Aniline is not :

  • Ethylamine is known to be dissolved in water due to the reason that it is capable of forming intermolecular hydrogen bonds with water.
  • However, in the case of aniline, the bulk of carbon present in the molecule prevents the formation of effective hydrogen bonding with water and makes it insoluble.
  • In other words, aniline does not undergo H−bonding with water easily due to the presence of a large hydrophobicC6H5(Phenyl) group, which can be given as:

  • However the formation of H bonding in case of Ethylamine with water can be shown as :

Hence, ethylamine is soluble in water whereas aniline is not.
